We keep our Lake clean

THE LAKE BASIN OF THE LAKE OF KASTORIA

The lake basin covers an area of ??353 Km2 and is surrounded by : from the North, from Mount Vernon with Vitsi as the highest  peak (2128 meters) and the highlands Spyridaki Sykavitsas and Agia Paraskevi. From the South,  from the hills Stony, Mikro Vouno and Korissos.

From the East,  the Falakra hills, the narrows of  Kleisoura and Pyrgos. From the West, the hill tops, Agia Triada, Kazani and Pertseli. There are 9 streams flowing into the lake of Kastoria.  The largest stream,  Xeropotamos takes up most of the eastern part of the basin and flows into the lake between the communities of Mavrochori and Polikarpi.

                           EUTROPHICATION

The term Eutrophication refers to the excessive growth of primary productivity.  For example, it is the  excessive growth of plant biomass (phytoplacton, aquatic, riparian vegetation) of a closed body of water.

The Eutrofication of lakes, for example the enrichment of the water body with large quantities of nutrients, especially nitrogen and phosphorus, may be due to natural factors (geographical, geomorphological, climatic morfometric, and other hydrodynamic characteristics of the Lake) and anthropogenic influences(urban sewage, livestock and industrial waste, agricultural land washings). Fertilizers and pesticides are still used in a wide range of agricultural crops in the lakeside area, which pollute the soil and the underground aquifer has the lake as a recipient. This situation has led to the strengthening of the Lake Orestias.

RUBBISH IN THE LAKE OF KASTORIA

Irons, nets, plates, tables and chairs and even beds have been gathered and taken out of the lake in a first attempt to clean it up. According to representatives of the Municipality, who had as tools only, a boat and an anchor, say that at the bottom of the lake there are even cars, for which a crane will be needed to drag them from the bottom.

"The effort will continue around the lake and the next step  to solve the problem  in cooperation with the DEYAK the problem of approximately six hundred buildings that are not connected to the main sewage system, as a result all sewage ending up into the lake" said  the chairman of the newly Commission's Lake City, Dimitris Tsompanos. He also appealed to residents not to throw garbage and other objects into the lake and to respect the ecosystem.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE PRESERVATION OF THE LAKE

WE should keep the lake and the surrounding areas clean.  For example the basin, because whatever is thrown in there ends up in the lake. A possible solution to prevent contamination of the lake is to convert crop cultivation to organic crops in order to reduce pesticide use and fertilizers. Also, the city could hire a special staff to maintain the lake clean.
